Obstetrician / Gynecologists

What is an Obstetrician / Gynecologist?

An obstetrician / gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the two surgical specialties dealing with the health of the female reproductive system (uterus, vagina, and ovaries) and the diagnosis and treatment of women's health issues, such as cancer, incontinence, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhoea, infertility, menorrhagia, and infections. The two specialties are generally combined to form a single Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) specialty and postgraduate training program. The combined training prepares obstetrician/gynecologists to deal with all issues related to the female reproductive organs, which includes providing care for both pregnant and non-pregnant patients.

Obstetrics / Gynecology Subspecialties

Maternal-fetal medicine is often referred to as perinatology, and is focused on the medical and surgical management of high-risk pregnancies and surgery on the fetus to reduce morbidity and mortality.

Reproductive endocrinology and infertility focuses on biological causes of infertility and interventional treatment.

Gynecological oncology focuses on the medical and surgical treatment cancers of the reproductive organs.

Urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of women with urinary incontinence and prolapse of the pelvic organs.

Professional Obstetrics / Gynecological Organizations

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology is an independent, non-profit organization that certifies obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States. The ABOG examines and certifies nearly 1,700 obstetrician-gynecologists and subspecialists in maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology/infertility and gynecologic oncology each year. Additionally, more than 18,000 physicians are examined annually for the purpose of maintenance of certification.

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has over 52,000 members and is the nation's leading group of professionals providing health care for women. The ACOG works primarily in four areas: serving as a strong advocate for quality health care for women; maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice and continuing education for its members; promoting patient education and stimulating patient understanding of and involvement in medical care; and increasing awareness among its members and the public of the changing issues facing women's health care.
